Italian Scallion
I was unfortunatly anticipating this letdown and this is why I have been reluctant to comment on the so-called "Year for PSU." Let me start off by saying that I know JoePa has been under heavy scrutiny by many in college football and by many fans, but he tops the list on things needing to be changed. So here comes my list of needs for Penn State:
1. New Coach who plays 2007 football instead of 1960 football. Evolution has taught us many things and one of them is survival of the fittest and JoePa - running the same plays year after year does not cut it. Scouting reports about Penn State are essentially the same as last year. Teams like USC and Notre Dame (with the exception of this rebuilding year) have newly adapted offenses and take risks from time to time. Penn State - same 'ole State! I don't care about all you've done for the school over the past 90 years, it's time to move on and let someone new come in to change things up. JoePa just mumbles anymore when he talks - same ole dog and pony show, "We just ughh, need to play better...they're a good ball club." Come on...
2. Seniority mentality. I don't care if you're a senior - if you suck, that's all there is to it! Playing kids simply because they have been there longer is something you might see in little league or pee-wee football, but is not expected by legions of Penn State fans longing for a National Title. Do it the American way - best man for the job gets it.
3. Loser schedules. Why must Penn state pad their schedules with teams nobody even knows the mascot of? Start playing some actual football against some good teams and having some good games instead of playing loserville schools. This does nothing for the program.
4. The Italian Scallion - Anthony Morelli. Maybe his lack of showcased talent is because of his lack of experience, possibly. Anthony Morelli has done almost nothing to this day for Penn State. In this season alone, he is responsible for 14 of the opponents combined points. He makes rookie errors, poor decisions, is exceptionally inaccurate, and cannot run if his life depended on it. Penn State fans gave him all of last year to improve - he has not. Even the worst kicker in the country Kevin Kelly was 3/3 against a poor Michigan team whom Morelli couldn't expose. Anthony Edwards of App state and Oregons QB ran spread offenses to spread out Michigans defense and they were picked apart. Morelli - nothing. The coaching staff - same ole plays. When your defense keeps you in every game, you need desperatly to score points. Penn State has the greatest receiving team in the country. Doesn't matter if you can't get them the ball.
5. Kevin Kelly. Isn't there someone in PA or in the PSU roster who can actually kick greater than 60% field goals? How come Boone their new punter is so good but this guy trying to get the ball between the goal posts is like trying to get 10 fat chicks in an elevator?
6. Fumblerooskie. Penn State has more fumbles than I could imagine. Austin Scott - overrated. Bring in Royster whose performed well in each game he's carried the ball. Royster, Hahn, and Kinlaw are PSU's hopefuls at RB.
7. 3rd and 10. Why is it the offensive strategy for Penn State is always either run up the middle or to pass for 3 or 4 yards when it's 3rd and 10? Seemingly, no person I know can answer this most easy of questions.
8. Chicanery. What ever happened to a little subterfuge in play calling? Penn State running a half back pass or end around is about as far as it goes with obscure play calling. Limited in terms of the option by an amobile quarterback of course is one thing, but there is no uniqueness about Penn States offense or play calling.
9. Losing every time you play Michigan. 'Nuff said.
